CITY OF OAKLAND, DEPARTMENT OF RACE & EQUITY |  2019-2024

Our CEO, Candice Wicks-Davis, was appointed as the Cultural Strategist in Government for the City of Oakland’s Department of Race & Equity (DRE). Her role was to work with the DRE team to make the Oakland Equity Indicators Report more accessible to the public and to inspire other city departments to prioritize equitable policies. In partnership the DRE Hodari, and Candice produced the following:

  • “The Soul of Oakland”, a 12-song album with one song for the lowest scoring equity indicator

    • This deliverable was used as a storytelling strategy to elicit an emotional response from the City workers and policy makers and to make the data more digestible for Oakland residents.

  • Twelve data visualizations for the lowest scoring equity indicators titled Exhibit A.

    • Just as the album, this deliverable was used as a storytelling strategy to engage an emotional response from the City workers and policy makers and to make the data more digestible for Oakland residents.

  • A discussion guide to support departments in having difficult conversations about race, particularly anti-blackness.

  • A two-part townhall series for City workers and policy makers and Oakland residents to discuss the data and how it should shape future policy.

Outcomes:

·      The DRE continues to leverage these assets to provide professional development for city workers and policy makers.

To ensure that our clients stay within their scope and budget, we employ several strategies such as:

·      Mapping out a scope and sequence before work begins, complete with objectives and dates for large scopes

·      Providing year-to-date reports every quarter for clients with large scopes and twice a year for smaller scopes

·      If a deliverable is taking more time than budgeted, we work with clients to make an adjustment to the scope and/or provide short form videos to support self-guided sessions.
