According to the American Federation of Teachers, the history of schools as community centers dates back to the early 20th century, emerging from the "social centers" movement to address urban poverty, immigration, and social cohesion. Today, this model is alive in the Beacon and Community Schools models but also many schools offer before and after school services without using those models. The key to the success of extended day programs is how well aligned they are with each other and the school day. In this workshop, we will share strategies for school day alignment including building strong stakeholder relationships, creating programmatic through lines and standardized expectations.
