Educating the Black Child w/ Damien McDuffie
Educating the Black Child w/ Damien McDuffie
VIRTUAL: Tuesday November 12, 11am-1pm PT
Black children are increasingly having their education and intake of information mediated through technology. Despite the technological revolution happening around the world, most Black children's engagement with technology is through music, video games, and cell phones. How can the digital divide be closed by accessing the technology currently being used by Black children? How can extended learning programs learn to see phones as assets for learning rather than liabilities?
This revamped EBC includes an in depth conversation with our guest Educator, Technologist and Artist Damien McDuffie. Damien is a creative technologist, digital archivist, and augmented reality (AR) artist and developer from Oakland. He is the founder of Black Terminus AR, a camera app and augmented reality art studio in your pocket that helps bring archives to life. His mission is to keep redlining out of the metaverse by developing and inspiring the next generation of Black creative technologists to use culture & art as a way into creative tech. This means he teaches Black youth and adults, organizations and institutions in the Bay Area and around the world to engage with Augmented Reality and creative technologies from an afrofuturistic perspective.
Following our conversation, EBC Chief Edutainer Candice Davis will lead a short workshop including tips for educators to integrate technology into their classrooms, especially using apps and cell phones as tools to enhance the educational experiences of their attendees. We will also take time to answer questions about integrating technology in the education of Black children.
